WASHINGTON,DC The renovation of this one-bedroom Watergate unit consisted of simple plan changes in the service of improving spatial quality. The foyer extends the curving hallway into the apartment, culminating in a “public” room (living, dining, sitting, kitchen) that opens onto the terrace. A kitchen island with a high back screens the kitchen functions, creating the “prairie dog effect”— only the heads of the kitchen users occasionally pop up — as seen from the living area.
